Will the New PMP Exam from JANUARY 2, 2021 be more Agile Focused?

Yes. The new  PMP Exam in 2021 will be more Agile focused

  • The PMP exam in 2021 will feature half of the questions about agile and hybrid approaches.
  • 50% of the questions will be on the Agile and Hybrid Project Life Cycle.

 

PMI conducts a survey once in 4 years to understand and identify the evolving changes and merging trends that impact project management and influence the roles and responsibilities of a project manager. There was one such survey conducted in 2019. Reflecting on the findings of the survey, PMI decided to update its PMP Exam Course Outline. The PMP exam will follow the new  PMP Course Outline (PCO).

 

We hear the ‘PMP Exam is changing’.

Yes. It is changing.

The new PMP exam format will be followed from JANUARY 2, 2021.

The current PMP exam course outline contains 5 main domains: initiating, planning, executing, monitoring and controlling, and closing.

The new PMP course outline (PCO) effective from JANUARY 2, 2021 will focus on 3 new domains based: Predictive, Agile And Hybrid approaches.

 

 

How does the new PMP Exam in 2021 connect with PMI Talent Triangle?

PMI published the new PMP Exam Content Outline published in June 2019.

The PMI Talent Triangle™ is a combination of technical, leadership, and strategic and business management expertise as defined by PMI.

The PMI Talent Triangle prescribes the primary skills essential for a Project Manager. The competencies based on the talent triangle are elaborated in the table below.

The new PMP exam in 2021 will require candidates to build capability and competency in three domains:

  • People (42%)
  • Process (50%)
  • Business Environment (8%)

How does the PMI Talent Triangle connect with the new PMP Exam Course Outline?

Look at how the Domains in the PMP 2021 Exam are mapped to the three primarily skills:

  • Leadership is mapped to the People domain.
  • Technical Project Management is mapped to Process domain.
  • Strategic & Business Management is mapped to Business Environment domains

Will 2021 PMP Exam be more Agile focused?

Yes. Agile becomes a MUST

The new PMP content outline

  • The PMP Exam Content Outline 2019 that will come into effect from 2 January, 2021 will be based on 3 domains.
  • Questions of PMP Exam will be categorized into three domains namely, People, Process and Business Environment.
  • The PMP exam in 2021 will feature half of the questions about agile and hybrid approaches.
  • Since the focus on Agile and hybrid approaches is higher, the number of questions will increase about it will increase.
  • 50% of the questions will be on the Predictive Project Life Cycle.  50% of the questions will be on the Agile and Hybrid Project Life Cycle. This distribution will be spread across all three domains.
  • The distribution of questions based on domains is broken down into 42% – people, 50% – process, and 8% business environment.

Should I take the PMP exam before the new 2021 update?

Yes. You better take up the exam before the changes come into effect on 1st July 2020. You still have time as it takes around 8 to 12 weeks to prepare. You have time left. Make the most of it. You know what to expect from the present PMP exam as there innumerable resources online and offline. But you have no idea what lies ahead for the new PMP 2020 exam. Given the uncertainty, it will be a wise call to get PMP certified when the window is still open. After March 31, 2020, it will be too late.
