What is PMP?
PMP certification is globally recognized and important certifications for the success of the Project Management career path. PMP is one of the toughest exams to clear.
According to the Project Management Institute (PMI®), PMP is a gold standard of Project Management Certification. It validates your competence to perform in the role of a project manager, leading and directing projects and teams.
The eligibility criteria to apply for PMP certification:
What is the PMP pass rate?
PMP pass rate is the number of candidates qualifying the PMP exam in the first attempt. PMI does not disclose any information on the PMP exam pass rate.
According to the survey conducted for Project Management Trainers And Experts In Linkedin,
“40% of project management experts responded that the passing rate for the PMP exam is less than 50%”.
PMI does not mention passing score now but when PMBOK Guide 3rd edition was released in 2004, PMI has stated the passing percentage would be 81%. The PMP Handbook of the year 2005 clearly mentioned a 61% passing score.
Also, in 2006 frequently asked questions section PMI had mentioned 106 marks out of 175 which approximately comes to 61%. But now PMI does not disclose any passing score or passing rate.
What is the passing score for PMP?
In the Project Management Institute’s PMP Handbook PMI clearly states that the passing score for all PMI exams is determined by the static model -Sound Psychometric Analysis.
PMI uses subject matter experts from around the world to determine how many questions you must answer correctly to pass the exam but it is not disclosed.
Each scored question on the exam is worth one point and your final score is calculated by totalling the points you have earned on the exam. There is no negative marking for the wrong answer.
No two candidates can get the same questions. Hence, it is clear that by using Sound Psychometric Model, PMI determines the difficulty level of question papers is similar for all the candidates.
Hence the passing score for every candidate is different.
There is no official statement about the passing score of PMP.
What is the structure of the PMP exam?

Even though PMI doesn't track pass/fail stats, some of the individual testing stations do. Took my PMP exam at a test station. Was at a test station that only allowed 10 people to test at the same time. I was there for PMP, the other 9 people were there to take LSAT test. Test administrator said the pass rate for PMP was 35% and LSAT was 45% at their station.
