PMI has announced that certification candidates can choose to take the certification exam online.
How do you take the PMP exam online?
Your online PMP certification exam experience will be similar to a traditional one, with some added benefits.
With the online option, you can take the test from your home with your internet-connected PC or tablet. You have to find a test center with the correct date and time slot for an in-person exam.
With the PMP exam online proctoring option, you can take your certification test at any convenient time. Here's what you need to know to prepare for the exam:
- Use a webcam computer – this way, you can have your proctor watch you during the exam.
- A fast internet connection is recommended.
- A room in which to take the PMP certification exam online, with 230 minutes to do so.
You can start your journey to becoming a PMP-certified professional from anywhere in the world. The first step is to attend a training provider's virtual training course.

As a participant in the program, you will have the option to schedule your exam online at your PMI profile.

How online proctoring works:
A live proctor will watch you take the exam with your webcam. Before your test starts, the proctor will take a picture of you and record videos of your room space.
The proctor will also use audio while they monitor you during the exam. Recording your surroundings is necessary because the proctor needs to hear what you're saying and verify that you are not reading anything else in the room that might help you during the exam or any other things that could invalidate your exam.
How will the PMP Exam be conducted online?
To take an exam on our website, you will need to download free exam software and install it on your personal computer. This software will lock your computer/laptop and does not allow you to access any other resources during the exam, including the internet, apart from the exam. It will also facilitate a simple calculator and a whiteboard for you to do calculations and rough work during the exam.
Please note that the exam allows for a 10-minute break and will run for 1 hour each. Thus, you will be able to have a gap between the two-part and, therefore, will not have to wait till the end of the exam.
However, you cannot access part 2 questions while part 1 is still running. You can consider it as part 1 and part 2. You will start the break once you review and submit the first part of the exam. During your break, you will NOT be able to check questions from the first part of the exam but will be given access to part 2 when time starts again.
If you are experiencing any technical difficulties, please contact your proctor using the Chat or VoIP system available during the exam. They can help you solve the most common problems. Still, if the technical issue prevents you from taking the exam, no time will be added to your exam, and you will not receive a refund.
If you would like to reschedule your exam, the proctor may or may not allow you for the same depending upon the technical issue. Still, you may or may not receive a refund as compensation either.
How to apply for the PMP Exam online?
To register for the PMP exam, you must apply to the Project Management Institute. When your application has been approved, you must pay a fee and schedule the exam. You may either go to a center or conduct it online to prepare for the exam. If you go to a center and then decide to register for an online exam, you can cancel your appointment at a center and not be charged a cancellation fee.

What happens if I encounter a technical problem during the exam?
