7 Most Common Mistakes You Must Avoid for PMP Exam

Scheduling, attempting, and succeeding in the Project Management (PMP) exam can be nerve-racking. So what's better than taking a little tension off and molding yourself to the path of PMP exam preparation?

This blog will see the seven most common mistakes in individuals who didn't pass the credential test on the first strike but ultimately learned from that and made changes to pass on their second attempt.

#1 Lack of Planning a Relevant Path to PMP Success

If you have been a project manager for a few years, it doesn't mean you can walk in on the exam day without an effective preparation plan. If you aren't sure where to begin, take a full-length PMP exam without concern over the period. From the initial trial, you can determine you're lacking in knowledge.

For instance, you did well on questions for one or more knowledge domains and poorly on the rest. This indicates that you must plan your path to PMP success. First, you will learn what domain you lack and where you're strong. From this, you can create your study schedule.

#2 Lacking Confidence to Appear for the Actual PMP Exam

The right amount of confidence is hard to obtain – either it's too much where you feel you don't need to study for PMP or too little where you assume you can't pass the credential exam.

If you have years of experience in the project management field and think the PMP exam will be as easy as ABC, please ensure that your experience covers the domains per the Exam Content Outline (ECO) 2021.

If it does, then that's a great head start. However, if it doesn't, you will have to create a plan for learning the concepts and terminologies of project management as defined in the PMBOK Guide and Agile Practice Guide.

Being indecisive about taking the PMP certification exam is a hurdle. However, you gain a bit of confidence by trying to understand the concepts of PMBOK and Agile Practice Guide than memorizing and by taking full-length practice tests and scoring 80% or more will help you get an idea of the question patterns and difficulties.

#3 Depending on the Unpaid Questions for PMP Prep

Free questions can be an excellent asset for PMP exam prep but to an extent. We all know the hefty expenses on the certificate - from training to the PMP credential test. And spending another leg on paid-accessing question banks is questionable, especially when free resources are widely available.

Like always, everything has its limitations, and so do unpaid questions. These questions only tell you whether the answer is correct or wrong. But several paid questions and exams offer you an explanation of why that particular question is right or wrong.

With explanations, candidates can learn from the mistakes and understand why it's a correct response. In addition, the PMP exam simulator offers around 1600 real exam model questions and access for 90 days so you can practice full-length tests.

#4 Not Taking Full-length PMP Exam

As you're aware, the PMP exam is 230 minutes consisting of 180 questions. If you are like many trying to pursue the PMP certification, it may have been some time as you had to sit for approximately 4-hours to complete the test.

During the actual PMP credential test, if you don't know the answer to a particular question, mark it and move on to the next question as time is limited. When you're done with the first 120 questions, you are given time to review the questions if you require a 10-minute break.

Hence try taking full-length PMP exams, which will help you in:

  • Getting used to sitting for long-hour exam
  • Answering questions on a computer
  • Understanding time management

#5 Focusing on the Wrong Concepts for the PMP Exam

The PMP certification exam covers a wide range of terminologies and materials. As a result, it can be easy to shift focus to the wrong areas. When you are too attentive to running through a mock test instead of concentrating on a combination of completing the exam and studying concepts, you may end up failing.

Therefore, ensure that the concepts you are focusing on are relevant and align with the current PMP exam. Such irrelevant focusing on subjects can lead you to a total mess most of the time, adding more stress than usual.

#6 Not Taking a PMP Exam Preparation Program

Some people attempt to cut down on their expenses and start studying independently. This is indeed a wrong choice. Exam preparation courses explain how the PMBOK Guide is the framework of best practices, and you can't solely depend on the Guide as a preparation ultimatum.

The preparation course also assists you in each exam section, breaking down relevant terminologies and concepts to ensure an in-depth understanding.

#7 Not Preparing for the Actual PMP Exam Day

As mentioned above, there are several mistakes the candidates have to look for before the exam day. But, that’s not all; specific prep has to be done on the day of the PMP exam too, which includes:

  • Not familiar with the exact location of the exam center.
  • Last minute rushing to the exam center.
  • Not having food before the exam
  • Not planning for and practising breaks.
